How is this different from Monkeytype, typing.com or other typing test sites?+
Those are excellent for building raw typing speed, but they don't model what an Indian government exam actually measures. TypeSarthi tests the specific keyboard layout most Hindi exams use (Remington GAIL / Kruti Dev, not InScript), shows the same attempt scored by the different formulas SSC, CPCT and RSMSSB reportedly use, and lets you simulate a specific exam's duration and Backspace behaviour in one click — none of which a general-purpose typing site is built to do.
How is this different from other SSC or CPCT typing practice apps?+
Most pick one scoring formula and present it as the answer. TypeSarthi shows the same attempt scored three different ways, because the boards genuinely don't agree — and we're upfront that none of these figures are verified against an official notification, rather than implying a certainty we don't have. We'd rather you know what's solid and what's a typical estimate.
What is Remington GAIL / Kruti Dev, and why does it matter?+
It's the keyboard layout most Hindi government typing exams actually test — different from InScript, which is what your operating system's own Hindi keyboard normally uses. TypeSarthi maps it directly, so you can practise the real exam layout without installing anything.
What's the difference between Training, Free and Exam typing modes?+
Training blocks you until you fix a mistake, so you build accuracy from the start. Free lets wrong keys through and allows Backspace, like most real typing software. Exam is the same as Free but with Backspace disabled, matching how several actual exam interfaces are configured — so exam day isn't the first time you've typed without a safety net.
What are exam presets, and are the pass marks official?+
One-click configurations — SSC CHSL, CPCT, RRB NTPC and others — that set duration, language, keyboard layout and pass mark together. The figures come from common practice sites and coaching material, not the boards themselves, and we say so on every preset. Treat them as a realistic practice target, not a guarantee of what you'll face.
What does Adaptive practice do differently from just doing more levels?+
It tracks your accuracy on every individual key and generates fresh practice text weighted toward whatever you're currently weakest on — not a fixed passage. As a key improves, it naturally shows up less, so you're always drilling what actually needs work instead of repeating what you've already mastered.
Can I race against someone else, or compare my scores to other people?+
Yes — create a race, share the code, and whoever joins types the same passage with live position updates. There's also an opt-in leaderboard by level and duration, shown only by a chosen alias, never your real name.
Will this get me through the SSC or CPCT typing test?+
It will build the speed and accuracy those tests measure, but TypeSarthi is practice software, not an examination authority. Our level targets are our own pacing — the real cut-offs differ between SSC, CPCT, state boards and departmental exams, and they change over time. Always check the current official notification for the exam you're sitting and practise against that number.
Why does it stop me after two mistakes?+
Because typing fast with uncorrected errors builds the wrong habit. Miss the same character twice in a row and input locks until you press Backspace — a deliberate pause that forces you to look at what went wrong instead of racing on. It's frustrating at first and it's the single feature most responsible for accuracy gains. You can switch it off in your settings if you'd rather practise without it.
What's the difference between gross and net WPM?+
Gross WPM counts everything you typed correctly, divided by time, using the standard five-characters-per-word convention. Net WPM subtracts your mistakes from that figure. Net WPM is what gates level progression, because it's the number that reflects usable output — most exams score you on something closer to net than gross.
Do I need to know Hindi typing already?+
No, but you do need the Inscript keyboard layout enabled in your operating system's language settings — that's how Hindi typing works in the actual examinations, so we don't simulate a different layout. Hindi passages start at Level 5, with more at Levels 9 and 10.
Are TypeSarthi certificates officially recognised?+
No. They record your performance inside this application and are useful as proof of practice and progress to yourself, a teacher or a coaching institute. They are not issued or recognised by any examination board or government authority, and no employer is obliged to accept one.
How long before I see improvement?+
That depends on your starting point and how often you practise, so any specific promise would be made up. What's consistent is that short daily sessions beat occasional long ones — the fingers learn through repetition spread over days. The Review page tracks your net WPM across sessions so you can see your own trend rather than relying on an average.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?+
The interface works on smaller screens, but typing practice on a touchscreen keyboard doesn't transfer well to an exam you'll sit at a physical keyboard. Use a laptop or desktop for actual practice. The virtual keyboard display is hidden automatically on Hindi levels and can be turned off entirely in your settings.
Can I practise with my own text?+
Yes. The Custom Text page lets you paste any passage — a previous year's exam paper, an office letter, your own notes — and practise on it with the same engine, stats and mistake tracking. Those sessions are recorded separately from the level curriculum.
